Of Mice and Men In Pop Culture

Of mice and men was written in the 1930s, yet is still being referenced in modern contexts. Below is a video showing these references in cartoons and TV shows:

It just proves how important Steinbeck's novella is now as well as when it was first published. It still holds moral value and is still respected, even though there was plenty of debate about the attitudes of it when it was first released. Even the introductory song to this video has a reference to the Robert Burns poem To A Mouse which Steinbeck got inspiration from:

We stick stick stick stick to the plan we laid out
But we know the saying The best best best best plans of both mice and men can go terribly wrong And they probably will

"The best-laid schemes o' mice an' menGang aft agley,An' lea'e us nought but grief an' pain,"

  1. How interesting, I loved this! It's great how once you know an iconic text like this, aspects of popular culture suddenly make sense, and you can 'get' the in jokes! In particular, I loved the lonely dog who smashed up everything he tried to love. Although comic, it does make us contemplate the truly tragic nature of Lennie Small.

Well, those of us in the know....:-)
